Chemistry

Compounds responsible for yellow and orange-red hues in leaves, are overwhelmed by green chlorophyll during the summer.

As chlorophyll production ceases, yellow and orange flavonoids and carotenoids are visible.

Deeper reds, purples, and magentas are caused by anthocyanin, not present throughout the year. Its production is triggered only during autumn.
