COVID-19 And Heart Health

Science magazine is the peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and one of the world's top academic journals.

Their article published February 9, 2022, begins with this: "COVID-19 takes serious toll on heart health - a full year after recovery. Giant study shows striking rise in long-term heart and vessel disease."

Here is the link to the article: https://www.science.org/content/article/covid-19-takes-serious-toll-heart-health-full-year-after-recovery

I knew viruses could cause damage, and I changed my lifestyle dramatically.

I continue to wear a mask for me, and for others.

Black History Month - Civil Rights

   I needed a bandage.

I chose this. It is one way I will show support for generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.

Ger Duany, Child Soldier

Ger Duany is an actor, author, and model who was born in what is now South Sudan, Africa.

As a child in the early 1980's, Ger was recruited against his will to be a soldier in the Sudanese civil war.

When he was 14 years old, he escaped to Ethiopia, then Kenya.

A humanitarian effort brought 3,800 boys to the United States, and at 16 years old, Ger was one of them - one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.

There were also Lost Girls, however they are mostly ignored by historical narratives. Females were considered subordinate in every way, and there were overt inequalities regarding the Lost Girls.

Ger could neither read nor write English, however he learned, and eventually completed a college education.

In 2014, the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) helped Ger reunite with his mother, and family members in Kenya's refugee camp.

Ger now helps spread awareness about the work of UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency.

"The Good Lie" (2014), is a feature-length movie about an American woman, portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, welcoming Sudanese refugees to the United States, and one into her home. It was produced by Ron Howard.

Ger stars as Jeremiah.

Ransomware

On February 8, 2022, the FBI issued a security-threat advisory to all healthcare organizations, regarding ransomware.

Health systems are being targeted in recent attacks, and threats are increasing.

In the summer of 2021, Scripps, a health system in California, was forced to close portions of their facilities due to a successful ransomware attack.

The attack meant turning away patients, and Scripps was unable to resume normal operations for about 4 weeks.

Correctional Facilities Are Not Designed To Effectively Handle Pandemics

In early 2021, the COVID-19 vaccination plan in Kansas was to vaccinate those in jails and prisons, in the second round of injections.

That placed inmates ahead of Kansas residents aged 18 to 64 with severe medical risks, who were scheduled in the third round.

The plan, based on CDC guidelines, also meant inmates could be vaccinated before victims, and family, affected by the crime for which the prisoner was being held.

The Kansas Senate reviewed the plan, and it is now a year later:

-  Early in the pandemic two-thirds of Kansas prisoners had been afflicted with the virus.

- Seventy-eight percent of Kansas inmates were eventually vaccinated, where only about 50% of all Kansans had received at least one dose, by choice.

- As Delta-variant infections surged, COVID-19 infections among Kansas inmates were very low.

- There were just over 6,100 cases of the virus from early 2020, through February, 2021, at Kansas Department of Corrections facilities.

- The Kansas prison system saw only 72 cases from March, 2021, through August, 2021.
