One of the Bibles used when Vice President Kamala Harris took the oath of office, was the personal Bible of Thurgood Marshall, the first Black, United States Supreme Court justice.
Vice President Harris requested it because she thought of him as, "one of my heroes and inspirations."
Prior to his Supreme Court appointment, Mr. Marshall was the attorney who, in 1954, argued before the United States Supreme Court, the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. The civil-rights action pertained to racially-segregated schools.
The ruling was, "Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."
Pictured, is Monroe Elementary School, one of four segregated Black schools operating in Topeka in 1951, the year a student of Monroe, Linda Brown, and her father, Oliver Brown, became plaintiffs in the legal battle over racial segregation.

Bobby Bell was an outstanding member of the Kansas City Chiefs, playing in the 1960's and 1970's.
In 1968, to support military personnel, Bobby was part of the NFL's USO Tour, visiting soldiers in Vietnam.
Bobby and the NFL group arrived in Vietnam the day a major escalation of the Vietnam war began: The Tet Offensive. It took the U.S. General Commander in Vietnam nearly 3 weeks to safely evacuate him, and the other USO Tour participants.
Bobby also visited active U.S. military personnel in Lebanon, the panama Canal, and more, lifting their spirits.
"One thing that has always been a priority for me, is to visit with the brave men and women of the United States military. After all, I just lined up and played football. They put their lives on the line every day for us." -Bobby Bell.

"We lived in a mixed neighborhood, but when school time came, I would have to take the bus and go clear across town, and the white children I played with would go to this other school." -Linda Brown, reflecting on her life as a nine year old.
The United States Supreme Court's landmark civil-rights decision in 1954, regarding Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, began with Linda, and her father, Oliver.
Ruling: State-sanctioned segregation of public schools is a violation of the 14th amendment, therefore unconstitutional.
