The United States Supreme Court's landmark civil-rights decision in 1954 regarding Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, began here:

"We lived in a mixed neighborhood, but when school time came I would have to take the school bus and go clear across town and the white children I played with would go to this other school." -Linda Brown, reflecting on her life as a nine year old.
