I made this photograph of Mike Alden, Director of Athletics at the University of Missouri in Columbia, in 2011. His tenure produced the most comprehensive run of athletic and academic successes in school history.

A couple of years before this image, Mike was on a trip to Vietnam with Nike. Very early one morning he was restless and left his upscale hotel in Ho Chi Minh City for a walk. For the equivalent of about 12 cents he took a ferry across the Saigon River to a rougher area. There was an immediate connection to the people.

Mike retired in 2015, and has returned to Vietnam many times for humanitarian efforts. He worked with Nike to expand their micro-financing program for businesses, helped with an orphanage for blind children and an AIDS/HIV center, helped secure community-clinics funding for people affected by Agent Orange, and much more.

Thank you, Mike. Keep up your good work.

A Determined Mother

The Franklin County, Kansas, Sheriff's Office received multiple calls of concern regarding a woman walking alone along a highway in the pre-dawn cold.

Upon speaking to the woman, deputies learned she was walking 6 miles to work each morning to her job at Love's Truck Stop in Ottawa, Kansas, then 6 miles back to her home in Princeton, Kansas, when her shift ended.

She supports herself and her young twins.

Sgt. Jesse Vega and his patrol team wanted to help. In a matter of days, they were able to find a van and child safety seats, secure vehicle insurance, and more, to give her as a surprise.

Hope

Somewhere over this rainbow is hope. I imagine bluebirds flying, dreams coming true, and trouble melting like lemon drops.

Songs of hope are about bad times coming to an end, with better times just ahead.

Spiritual songs with hope and inspiration like "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" were sung by slaves in the United States.

Lyrics for "Over the Rainbow" were written by Yip Harburg, and the music composed by Harold Arlen, both Jews living in America, in 1938. This was a time when the persecution of Jews in Germany was escalating.

Songs of optimism will be written about the Covid-19 pandemic.

I caught up with Jeff Herther being interviewed on Carm Capriotto's Remarkable Results Podcast. He was awarded a scholarship at Vision Hi-Tech Training and Expo.

Jeff served with the United States Marine Corps, and is now an automotive professional in Pennsylvania working on custom-built cars.

Marcus Luttrell: Navy SEAL, Retired; Military Veteran

In 2005, Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL, was part of Operation Redwing in Afghanistan with other SEALs.

During an intense gun battle, other members of his team were killed; Marcus was the only survivor. Badly wounded, he crawled and walked seven miles to evade capture. American forces rescued him six days later.

Marcus wrote the book Lone Survivor in honor of his team members.

The movie, Lone Survivor, starred Mark Wahlberg who played Marcus (2013). It was nominated for an Academy Award, and won a Screen Actors Guild Award (2014).

Marcus is committed to these words: "I will never quit. My nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight."

Thank you for your military service.
