Alvin's mother was 14 years old when she gave birth to him; her pregnancy was the result of rape.Very soon after being born, he went to live with a friend of the family.
As a child, Alvin spent a fair amount of time in the hospital. He was diagnosed with epilepsy, a degree of mental illness, and was the victim of sexual assault.
He believed he would not live to be adult.
The deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Alvin's friend Steve Harvey, a saxophone player, inspired him to become a persistent civil-rights activist.
Thank you, Alvin. You persevered adversity, and you never gave up.

This is a photograph and story from March 20, 2020. We were dazed and confused by the incipient pandemic:
"Tuesday - I photographed this vacant bar. The lone employee started her job 3 weeks ago, and was now being laid off due to the COVID-19 issue. Friday would be her last day.
Wednesday - I found a $20. bill in a parking lot.
Thursday - I returned to the bar intending to give the $20. bill to the woman being laid off, knowing it would be appreciated. She was no longer there.
About 60 food-and-beverage employees were laid off this week, and although she was scheduled to work until Friday, she was gone Thursday."

"Homo sapiens possessing brains filled with everything we know about science and medicine, are trying to defeat the CO-rona VI-rus D-isease - 2019, which has no brain. It is an amalgam of proteins, with a bit of RNA.
This upscale bar should be teeming with patrons. Food-and-beverage employees are gone, as are local musicians.
Our genus Homo, and our species, sapien, sapientum, translates from Latin as, "wise man". Let us use our wisdom to be patient with this situation, and generous to all."

Urban diastole: The heart of the city at rest.
Our Country Club Plaza is nearly vacant as the COVID-19 pandemic affects us. Restaurants no longer offer dine-in service. Some stores are open, others temporarily closed.
The heart of the city will refill soon.

This is from March 12, 2020, and I remember the feeling vividly:
"The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is empty. Because of the Covid-19 virus, there will be no events for 21 days. I was making photographs there tonight, and feel I documented something of historical significance as it closed."

This is a Landoll 440 trailer that I happened to see in action.
I have been fortunate to have photographed Don Landoll a few times, and met some of his family.
This family-owned company is a world leader in design, innovation, and manufacturing, and has generously shared their success by being active in their community.

Janis Ian wrote "Society's Child" in 1965 about what was then the off-limits topic of interracial romance.
Ms. Ian began writing the song at the age of 13, and finished it when she was 14 years old.
